Hair Loss Causes and Treatments

Let’s face it, hair loss is a sore subject for those who suffer from it. It can change the way we feel about ourselves.

Treating hair loss is similar to solving any sort of problem. It is important to understand the problem before trying out a solution.

Hair Loss Causes and Misconceptions

There are many types of hair loss as well as many misconceptions when it comes to what causes them.

In this video, Debunked puts together an extensive list of hair loss types and puts to rest some popular misconceptions to why this hair loss happens.

Receding hairlines, bald spots on the top of the head, and thinning hair all fall under the name Androgenetic Alopecia or pattern hair loss.

As Debunked reports, having sex and high levels of testosterone DO NOT cause pattern hair loss.

The culprit in this scenario is actually a chemical called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is converted from testosterone, which is essential for growing body hair, developing muscle mass, and forming a deep voice.

Adversely, DHT is responsible for causing the shrinking of the hair follicles in the scalp which also causes this pattern hair loss.

This condition is generally hereditary and can come from mothers and fathers alike.

Another general misconception states that applying styling products to hair, washing hair often and even drying hair with a towel will cause a person to be susceptible to balding. These misconceptions are untrue.

While applying large amounts of product to hair without washing it out can cause damage to the hair shaft itself, the product is not making its way to the follicle. Even if the product was applied to the scalp and massaged in, it would not cause balding; however, applying the product to the scalp in this fashion could cause the scalp to be irritated and dry.

Washing hair every day does not cause balding either. The worst-case scenario is that you will damage the actual hair shaft itself by constantly, aggressively drying the hair with a towel. You could also cause the scalp to become dry and flaky. These conditions are easily treatable by switching to a milder shampoo, applying conditioner to the hair, and blow-drying hair in a continuous manner versus towel drying.

Stress and trauma also do not have an effect on pattern hair loss but could trigger an auto-immune disease called Alopecia Areata.

This form of Alopecia is responsible for hair loss in seemingly random circular patches on the scalp, face, and body. Little clinical evidence shows a connection to stress and Alopecia Areata hair loss. Some other factors to collectively consider include:

• Hormones
• Viruses
• Allergies
• Toxins

When these factors combine, they could trigger the disease. Thankfully, four out of five patients recover from Alopecia Areata with no signs of ever losing the hair in the first place.

It’s not to say stress doesn’t cause hair loss at all. In fact, stress and trauma can send our bodies into survival mode where the body shuts down non-essential processes for life which includes hair growth. Since hair growth is cyclical, if that cycle is disrupted, a large amount of shedding can occur which would give the appearance of hair loss.

Suffer from Hair Loss? Let the Hair Specialists in NJ Restore Your Hair — And Your Confidence

Nearly 40% of women have visible hair loss by the time they’re forty. And for men, the news is no better with 85% of men experiencing hair loss by age 50.

Hair loss contributes to low self-esteem, loss of confidence, and causes emotional and psychological trauma in sufferers.

Women seem to suffer more than men from these deleterious side effects, partially because baldness is more common, and more accepted, among the male population.

Truth is, no matter whether you’re male or female — hair loss can be devastating.

Hair Specialists in NJ Can Help You Get the Treatment You Need

There’s more than one way to restore thinning hair. The hair specialists in NJ, the Contemporary Hair Transplant, will help you sort through all possible therapies to find the program that’s right for you and your type of hair loss.

To give you an idea of what we can offer, let’s look at the top three treatments.

PRP Treatment for Hair Loss

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a non-surgical way to stimulate your body to regrow your hair. As a New Jersey PRP specialist, we have onsite equipment so all aspects of the procedure are in our control.

PRP treatment for hair loss involves drawing your blood and spinning it in a centrifuge. Our technique separates the platelet-rich plasma in a way that gives you 3-5 more times growth factors than standard PRP.

Then, we’ll inject this solution into the scalp so it can stimulate your body to repair and revitalize your follicles. PRP usually involves several treatments over time.

Strip Harvesting Hair Transplant

Strip harvesting is the standard in hair transplantation. A skilled doctor will remove strips of tissue containing donor follicles that will be grafted to where your hair loss has occurred.

Our technique harvests smaller strips so scarring is greatly minimized. Plus, the ability to retrieve many follicles at once means the procedure often only takes one session.

One session means less discomfort and downtime for patients.

FUE Hair Transplant

We can also use Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) to provide fantastic results without scarring.

Like strip harvesting, FUE allows doctors to harvest many follicles at once to reduce discomfort and minimize the number of sessions necessary.

Extreme skill is needed to choose the right, unique follicular unit that will thrive in the new location.

Our doctors have the knowledge and technology to ensure the most successful rates of transplantation using this method.
