Hair Transplants Then and Now

HAIR! Whether we spend time washing it, shaving it, or styling it, most people are very aware of the hair all over their own body.

Hair, especially on the top of the head, is an important part of how people chose to present themselves. It is associated with beauty and good looks, and those who lose their hair tend to lose some confidence as well.

Luckily, thanks to modern science, technology, and medicine, people DON’T have to lose their hair anymore!

As the solution to the balding process still remains a mystery to scientists, hair transplants have become extremely popular in recent times as a remedy to hair loss.

In this video, BBC Earth Lab discusses the various hair transplantation techniques in detail and explains science hair loss.

Our entire bodies possess the ability to grow hair, besides a few spots like our lips, palm of our hands, and soles of our feet and the hair on all areas of the body grows the same.

All hairs have a hair follicle, which is where hairs increase overtime in length. Naturally, hairs do fall out and are replaced by new ones. Unfortunately, for some people, hairs in certain areas stop growing and never replace themselves.

There are a number of causes that could stop hairs from growing. It could be due to a major trauma which would leave scar tissue without follicles. More commonly, the follicles seem to just simply stop growing hair.

A hormone called dihydrotestosterone, also known as DHT, seems to interfere with the hair follicles and stop them from growing hair. This type of hair loss is referred to as alopecia.

The enzyme 5-alpha-reductase (5-AR) converts testosterone into DHT and about 10% of testosterone is usually converted into DHT. Both men and women can have alopecia; however, it is more common amongst men.

Men naturally produce more testosterone, therefore it makes sense that they would be more commonly affected. In fact, this type of hair loss is most commonly known as male pattern baldness.

Hair transplants have become increasingly popular over the years, and they offer a solution to those that are losing their hair. Not only are the hair strands transplanted, but healthy hair follicles as well.

Back in the 1950s, doctors discovered that it was possible to successfully remove a hair follicle from one area of the body and transplant it to another area. They also discovered that around the back and sides of the head exits a “safe zone” of permanent hair growth that is not affected by the alopecia and holds many healthy follicles that can be used for transplantation.

The first type of hair transplants used what are called “plugs.”

Surgeons would remove small patches of skin that had about 20 follicles each and then insert these plugs into the bald area. This often left patients with unnatural looking hair.

In the last few decades, hair transplantation procedures have greatly improved. Rather than moving 20 follicles together at once, hair transplants now entail moving just one or two follicles, or follicular units, at a time.

There are two popular transplantation methods in which this occurs.

The first method is called Follicular Unit Transplantation, also known as the Strip Method. It involves removing a strip of skin from the safe zone along the back of the head. This strip is then cut and sliced into individual follicles.

Next, these follicular units are inserted into small slits that were made on the bald area of the head.

The other popular method is called Follicular Unit Extraction. This technique uses a tool to cut around individual follicular units and just remove that very small piece, leaving the rest of the skin intact. These follicular units are typically taken from the safe zone as well.

These cuts leave very tiny circular holes that will heal and barely leave any scarring. Then these individual units are inserted into the small slits that were made on the bald area of the head.

19 Questions You Have About Follicular Hair Transplants

Let’s cut to the chase.

The negative impact balding has on your self-esteem is not a myth.

But, you know what is? Hair Transplant surgery you can’t afford; it’s no coincidence that hair transplants are up more than 80% since 2006, per the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).

Cutting-edge technology has made drastic improvements to hair restoration techniques by improving efficacy and reducing hair transplant surgery risks and cost.

Thinning hair, bald spots, and receding hairlines are not only hard blows to your self-esteem and confidence. Hair loss can also affect your romantic life and make you feel depressed.

2 out of 3 men in the US will show notable male pattern baldness by their mid-thirties, and 2 out of 3 women will suffer from female pattern baldness by their late 50s, usually post menopause.

If your hair loss is affecting how you feel and look, it’s “prime time” for a Hair Transplant. Here are 19 common hair transplant questions and their respective answers.

1. What is Follicular Unit Transplantation?

Follicular Unit Transplantation or FUT is a method where a surgeon harvests bundles of hair follicles from donor regions of your scalp – usually the back or sides of your scalp – and transplants them to balding areas.

There are two hair transplant techniques by which a surgeon can harvest the follicular units from the donor regions of your scalp.

The first is referred to as FUT Hair Transplant or “Strip Harvesting,” and the second method is Follicular Unit Extraction usually called FUE Hair Transplant.

2. What is the Difference Between Strip Harvesting and FUE Hair Transplant?

Difference Between Strip Harvesting and FUE Hair Transplant

STRIP HARVESTING TECHNIQUE:

The Strip harvesting technique has been around longer than FUE, a newer procedure which has only really come into the spotlight in the last decade or so.

The main differences between FUT and FUE are that during FUT hair transplant surgery, the donor follicles are collected in a strip a few inches long, which is why FUT hair transplant is referred to as “Strip Harvesting.”

Strip Harvesting leaves a linear scar is left on the donor region of the scalp. This linear scar is not visible unless the hair is shaved or buzzed down to a shortcut. One of the leading reasons why patients opt for FUE is to avoid this scar if they want to keep a very short cut to the back of the head.

FUE TECHNIQUE:

Follicular Unit Extraction, on the other hand, is a technique where a surgeon harvests follicular units individually.

If you opt for FUE hair transplant, you won’t be left with a linear scar on the donor region of your scalp.

However, FUE will leave tiny round scars! The advantage is that these scars are hidden even with a short buzz cut.

FUE is more time consuming, intricate, and labor intensive for the surgeon, FUE hair transplant will be more expensive than Strip Harvesting.

3. Do Hair Transplants Work on African American Hair?

Yes, they do.

Strip Harvesting has shown greater success with African American Hair.

4. Which Hair Transplant Works Best for Female Pattern Baldness?

Which hair transplant surgery is best for women?

Yes, female pattern baldness is real and affects millions of women in the US.

FYI, around 2 out of 10 of all hair transplant surgeries are on women. For women affected by female pattern hair loss, early signs commonly surface post menopause.

Most surgeons and hair loss specialists shave the heads of their patients before Follicular Unit Extraction. With Strip Harvesting, shaving hair pre-op isn’t necessary.

The majority of women are not willing to shave their head for FUE when they can get equal results with Strip Harvesting. Also, women’s hairstyles are typically long and they don’t have to worry about the linear scar showing through.

5. How Do I Know If I’m a Good Candidate for Strip Harvest vs FUE?

You’re Likely a Good Candidate for Strip Harvesting Hair Transplant Surgery If:

  • You’re a man and don’t plan on a short buzz cut or shaving your head
  • You’re a woman with long hair
  • You’re African American

You’re Likely a Good Candidate for FUE Hair Transplant Surgery If:

  • You prefer to wear your hair very short
  • You aren’t attracted to the idea of FUT’s linear scar
  • You have scarring or a tight scalp not allowing a strip harvest

6. Can Hair Transplants Be Performed On Eyebrows?

Can Hair Transplants be Performed on Eyebrows?

Follicular Unit Transplantation can help men and women who want thicker and fuller eyebrows. Both a Strip Harvest or FUE can be used.

Just like transplant for balding areas on the head, single follicular units will be extracted from the back of the head and sides of the scalp and delicately placed in the eyebrow region.

FUT is the most permanent option for eyebrow hair restoration on the market and the results are very natural.

7. Do Hair Transplants Work for Fuller Beards?

Do Hair Transplants Work for Fuller Beards

Beards are “in.”

But, sometimes genetics can get in the way of being able to grow one, like the ones you see plastered all over IG.

A beard transplant can be achieved via Strip Harvesting or FUE. Surgeons will decide on which technique will be better depending on where the hair is harvested.

FUE would be used to harvest follicular bundles from a donor region under the chin. This donor area is ideal because the hair on the scalp has a different density and texture than facial hair.

If not, follicles are harvested from the back of a patient’s scalp. Once the grafts are removed from the donor area(s), your surgeon will place them to fill in empty beard areas.

8. Will My Hair Look Natural Post Hair Transplant Surgery?

Both techniques can provide very natural looking results, but ultimately your individual results will depend on the surgeon you choose.

Some surgeons are more detailed in their work than others. Which is why it’s important to do research on each potential surgeon and to meet with them for a thorough examination.

A surgeon will help you determine if you are eligible for hair transplant surgery, which hair transplant is the best option for you, and whether they as a surgeon are the best fit for you in general.

9. How Do I Know When a Surgeon is the Best Fit for Me?

Tips When Choosing a Hair Transplant Surgeon

When choosing your surgeon there are some things you need to consider, other than the basics, such as their education.

You should ask your surgeon how much experience they have in both Strip Harvesting and FUE procedures. It is also important to choose a board certified surgeon for your hair transplant.

1. Bias – most surgeons either specialize in FUT or FUE. Just make sure that the surgeon is not biased towards the technique they have expertise with and that their medical recommendation actually has your best interest in mind.

2. Examination – Make sure your examination to determine hair transplant candidacy is done by the surgeon that will potentially be performing your surgery, rather than just a consultant.

10. How Long Does Hair Transplant Surgery Take?

The length of hair transplant sessions vary depending on two things: the number of grafts and type of harvest.

At Chuback Medical, we spend the morning harvesting and preparing the grafts. You get a break for lunch and the afternoon is dedicated for placement of grafts.

Ultimately, everyone is different, but plan for an “all day event.”

11. Is Hair Transplant Surgery Going to Hurt?

In fact, the only discomfort you’ll feel during hair transplant surgery is a slight pinch when local anesthesia is applied to areas of the scalp that the surgeon will be working on.

At Chuback Medical, we make our patients as comfortable as possible.

Patients are awake and can listen to music or watch movies and videos in a reclined chair during surgery. We also provide patients lunch.

p.s. Bring your smartphone or tablet if you like!

12. Do I Need to Plan to Take Time Off Work?

Patients go home right after their surgery and can resume normal light daily activities the day after surgery.

However, unless you work at home, you will need to take some time off work. Our recommendation is a week, but that can vary depending on the patient and the work environment.

13. What Are the Risks?

Like with any surgery, there are risks. We minimize these risks by maintaining high surgical standards.

Call 201-261-1772
to discuss your many options and start looking forward to seeing a youthful reflection in your mirror tomorrow.

With hair transplant surgery the biggest risk of concern is that some of the transplanted follicles die, unable to grow new hair. If that happens, we don’t get the hair growth we want for our patient, which is the whole point of the surgery!

We minimize this risk by maintaining high standards such as using state-of-the-art products to prepare and store the grafts to optimize their survival and growth.

14. Will I Be Left With Scars?

The scars left after hair transplant surgery are minimal at Contemporary Hair Transplant because our surgeon is a board-certified plastic surgeon and uses meticulous technique for closure of the donor site.

If you opt for Strip Harvesting, expect a thin linear scar to be left on the back of your head. Normal hair growth will hide this scar. However, this is one of the main reasons why patients – especially those who choose to wear their hair short – sometimes opt for FUE hair transplant surgery.

But, don’t be mislead.

FUE hair transplant leaves scars as well, but they look like multiple tiny pinpricks instead of one thin linear scar.

15. Will I See Hair Growth Immediately?

Most of our patients witness their new hair growth anywhere between 4 to 6 months after hair transplant surgery. We tell patients the final results will take up to a year.

Keep your expectations in check; you will not be walking out of hair transplant surgery with a full head of hair, but you will get your life and confidence back when all your new hair grows in.

16. Can Hair Transplant Surgery Help if I’m Bald?

You have to have enough actively growing hair and large enough donor regions for hair transplantation.

If you have significant hair loss, hair transplantation may not be an option. To determine your candidacy for a hair transplant surgery, schedule a consultation.

17. What’s the Success Rate of Hair Transplant Surgery?

Rate of Success of Hair Transplant Surgery

Technology has caused the rate of hair transplants to boom, as well as their levels of success.

As of 2018 the average percentage of grafts that survive after transplantation and result in new hair growth is anywhere between 85-95%.

Most hair transplant patients report greater than 60% new hair growth as soon as six to nine months after their surgery.

18. What Value Can I Expect from Chuback Medical?

At Chuback Medical you will receive high-quality care at a brand new, state-of-the-art facility, conveniently located 15 minutes outside of Manhattan in Paramus, NJ.

Dr. Bastidas (Dr. B) is also an Associate Member of the prestigious ISHRS (International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery).

During procedures, Dr. B stays in close proximity of the patient the whole time, monitoring their comfort level, talking to them. Patients’ transplantation procedures are always accompanied by PRP Hair Therapy to maximize graft survival and promote a faster growth rate.

Chuback Medical also partners with CareCredit to make hair transplant options as affordable as possible. If you are in the Northern NJ and Tri-state area, feel free to schedule a consultation today.

19. What is PRP Hair Therapy?

At Contemporary Hair Transplant, Dr. B accompanies all hair transplant surgeries with PRP treatment, also known as (Platelet Rich Plasma) PRP Hair Therapy

PRP hair therapy increases the chances of follicular survival rate. PRP is achieved by drawing your blood, running it through a centrifuge machine, which separates the platelets out.

The platelets have growth factors that have a positive effect on hair growth and graft growth.

This Platelet Rich Plasma is then applied to your scalp and on the grafts during hair transplant surgery.

PRP hair therapy has been shown to stimulate the growth of thinning hair follicles with minimal side-effects in randomized, placebo-controlled trials. PRP can also be used as a treatment for thinning hair, separate from FUT hair transplant surgery, especially for individuals just beginning to see hair loss.

The Hairy Reality

Women find men with hair more attractive.

One recent study on hair transplants found that post-surgery (once new hair growth kicked in) men received 75% more Tinder matches, compared to pre-surgery.

That’s quite a boost, but it’s not the only one. Hair transplant surgery is a means for you to get your self-confidence and life back. It’s a long-term investment, but a permanent one.

The bottom line is, quality surgeons will charge accordingly. Be careful of hair transplant clinics that advertise extremely low costs. Rock bottom costs usually correlate with rock-bottom quality.

Rock bottom costs usually equal rock-bottom results and we think you deserve much better for yourself.

After all, you didn’t think David Beckhams’ or Lebron James’ thinning hair and receding hairlines fixed themselves did you?

5 Ways Follicular Unit Transplantation Revolutionized the Hair Transplant Game

You don’t have to pull a “Jeff Bezos” or “Bruce Willis.”

If you don’t want to.

It’s 2018 and male pattern baldness – the root cause of 95% of male baldness – is a choice and not a genetic inevitability.

An affordable choice at that.

The leading procedure that revolutionized the hair transplant game by producing effective, affordable and practically permanent results is called Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT).

Here’s why Follicular Unit Transplantation is a great solution if you’re noticing thinning hair, a widow’s peak hairline and other early signs of male pattern baldness.

FYI be proactive and act once you notice a boost in the amount of hair you shed or the rate of thinning. Unfortunately, Follicular Unit Transplantation is not a procedure that can help if you’re already completely bald.

What is Follicular Unit Transplantation?

FUT is a surgical procedure where naturally occurring hair bundles or follicular units are removed from donor regions of your scalp and transplanted to balding areas.

“Donor” regions are areas on your head where hair is resistant to hair loss and will actively grow in the bald areas it is transplanted to.

The follicular units can be harvested from the donor areas in 2 ways. One way is known as “The Strip Method” or Strip Harvesting. This method has been used for decades and is reliable and predictable for creating excellent grafts for transplant. The other way is FUE or follicular unit extraction which has opened doors to more patients looking for hair loss treatment options.

Because there is a “safe zone” in male pattern baldness the donor grafts for Follicular Unit Transplantation are removed from the sides and back of the head.

How to Know if You’re a Good Candidate for the FUT Procedure

You can’t be 100% sure you’re an eligible candidate for FUT unless you schedule a consultation with one of our surgeons.

But there are indicators that increase your chances of being a candidate for FUT hair transplant.

You’re more likely to be an eligible candidate for the FUT procedure if:

  • You’re a male or female with hair loss
  • Your pattern of baldness is genetic and following predictable patterns
  • You have enough actively growing hair on the back and sides of your head
  • Your hair loss is already affecting your appearance and confidence
  • You have realistic expectations of the procedure

As a general rule, you’re likely a good candidate for Follicular Unit Transplantation if your baldness has progressed enough to affect your appearance but not enough be at an advanced stage on the Norwood Hamilton Scale or Ludwig Hair Loss Scale.

If you think you’re an eligible candidate for FUT, here are the 5 great benefits that are linked to “The Strip Method” and why it’s considered a gold standard hair transplant procedure.

Natural Results

We can go to mars but there still isn’t a cure for male pattern baldness.

Since prevention is out of the question, the next best thing is a treatment that produces very organic results. Like you being able to go to the barber for a haircut in as little as three weeks post surgery.

Follicular Unit Transplantation results are just that. You won’t have to worry about your hair looking “fake” by any means.

Such high-quality results occur because doctors are able to maximize the number of follicles harvested during one FUT session, group the follicular units by their number of hairs per unit, and strategically place them in a natural and effective fashion.

Really Affordable

Follicular Unit Transplantation with a strip harvest will almost always cost you less than comparable treatment options.

Since you’ll be paying price per graft, you’ll only pay for what you need to be compared to one flat fee.

So that you’re aware, Chuback Medical Group partners with CareCredit, an account many of our patients use specifically for their out-of-pocket hair transplant procedures.

Power-Packed Sessions

Strip Harvesting allows your surgeon to harvest and graft a large number of follicular units in one session.

Because of this, up to 3000 hair follicles can be transplanted during FUT hair transplant surgery, almost twice the amount compared to Follicular Unit Extraction.

Another plus is that surgeons won’t have to shave your hair if you decide FUT is the best hair transplant treatment option for you, as they will for comparable treatments.

Higher Follicle Survival Rate

Keep in mind that with all hair transplant surgeries, not every hair follicle that’s transplanted will survive, and each procedure has its individual follicle survival rate.

Although FUE has proven immense success in recent years, FUT follicle survival rate is still higher.

FUT is most likely the wiser investment if your male pattern baldness is progressing quickly and depleting your donor regions with rapidity.

Results are Permanent

Grafted sections transplanted during FUT sessions are permanent, which is great news since it means your results can last a lifetime.

Just remember, hair transplant procedures are not preventative and will not stop pattern baldness from progressing so care of your non-transplanted hair is of primary importance to minimize any progression.
