Injectables and Fillers for Facial Rejuvenation — The Unblemished Truth

Wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process — but they don’t have to be.

Today’s crop of injectables and fillers can restore youthful volume to your face, smooth out wrinkles, and prevent new ones from forming.

In fact, results are so remarkable that use of fillers has increased by 759 percent since 2000 and the use of Botox has increased by 279 percent in the same time span.

How Injectables and Fillers Turn Back Time

Neurotoxin injections and cosmetic fillers are a simple, safe, cost-effective way to restore youthful volume and smoothness to an aging face.

By renewing lost volume (JUVÉDERM®) and smoothing out surficial wrinkles (BOTOX®), you can keep your fresh-faced, glowing looks for longer.

These therapies are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have an established track record for outstanding patient satisfaction and natural-looking results.

BOTOX® for Wrinkles

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the leading brand of botulinum toxin and the “Gold Standard” for wrinkle reduction — and prevention.

Regular injections of BOTOX® not only smooth existing deep wrinkles, like the “elevens” or sets of lines that form between brows but prevents wrinkles from forming in the future.

BOTOX® works by paralyzing the underlying muscles to prevent wrinkles that form from repetitive expressions. The longer you use it — the fewer wrinkles you’ll have to look forward to later.

JUVÉDERM® Voluma®, Vollure, Volbella® for Volume

Most women lose volume in their faces due to advancing age, weight loss, or hormonal changes and this can contribute to aging looks and a tired appearance.

The JUVÉDERM® family of injectables for face (and even hands) can help restore volume loss and help you look younger and more vibrant.

There’s a specialized product for each trouble spot.

Cheeks often flatten during aging, causing sagging and a haggard appearance. JUVÉDERM® Voluma® will lift the cheek area and add volume for a natural look. If you have severe lines or wrinkles in the same area, JUVÉDERM® Vollure can soften these harsh lines.

For lip lines and thinning lips, JUVÉDERM® Volbella® will subtly soften the look of lines around the mouth and add volume to the lips.

JUVÉDERM® can even help with troublesome nasolabial fold lines, sometimes called “parentheses.” In fact, studies show that these injectables for your face can help stimulate collagen production to increase volume naturally.

Increased collagen means more volume and fewer wrinkles — naturally.

Bergen County Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jamie Bastidas Answers Your Questions about Botox®

In the news articles we publish on our website, we have focused primarily on subjects related to one aspect of our practice, the treatment of varicose veins and other vein diseases. But there is another important side of our medical expertise that helps to make us one of the most respected medical centers in New Jersey, so we’re going to start including articles about the Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery procedures we specialize in. This month’s article is about the most commonly-prescribed aesthetic procedure in the world, Botox®.

What exactly is Botox®, and how is it used to improve the appearance?

According to our Bergen County plastic surgeon, Botox® is a drug derived from a common bacterium called Clostridium Botulinum. It is used for a number of therapeutic medical applications, including a chronic migraine, limb spasticity (muscle paralysis or rigidity), and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Botox® Cosmetic is also used as an aesthetic treatment to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The treatment works because the Botox Cosmetic blocks nerve impulses that cause the muscle contractions that create wrinkles, to give the skin a smoother and younger appearance.

What conditions can Botox help with?

Here at Chuback Medical Group, we have effectively used Botox to treat:

  • Crow’s feet – lines that form around your eyes when you smile
  • Bunny lines – horizontal lines on the sides of the nose
  • Glabellar lines – vertical frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Horizontal forehead lines – created when you raise your eyebrows
  • Platysamal bands – muscle banding also known as “turkey neck”

What is involved in getting Botox treatments?

Botox Cosmetic treatments are fast and simple. Botox is injected below the surface of the skin in the areas being treated. Each injection takes only a few seconds and causes little to no discomfort. You will be able to resume your daily activities the same day. Results from Botox injections are usually noticeable in 7 to 10 days and last for 3 to 4 months.

If you want to find out more about Botox or our other cosmetic procedures, give some of the best plastic surgeons in Bergen County a call at 201-693-4847. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have.

How to have young-looking hands again

Check out this new article about Chuback Medical Group at BERGENCOUNTY.COM

One of the best ways to tell a woman’s age is to look at her hands. As we age, our hands lose their youthful plumpness and begin to look bony and fragile. Veins, tendons and joints often protrude, and skin texture becomes thin and translucent. Age spots are common.

Combating the aging process takes more than just a hand cream with sunscreen. The latest anti-aging medical advancements in hand rejuvenation can make a dramatic improvement.

For serious bulging veins in the hands, patients might choose microphlebectomy, a minimally invasive procedure where unsightly veins are removed through tiny incisions. The procedure usually takes less than an hour and the recovery time is rapid. Patients experience little to no scarring with excellent clinical and cosmetic results.

To restore volume to older hands, a cosmetic filler, such as Radiesse, can be injected to give the hands plumpness. Another benefit is the filler can conceal protruding tendons.

“Radiesse immediately plumps up and replenishes volume to the back of the hands to provide a supple and youthful appearance,” says Dr. John Chuback, medical director of Chuback Medical Group in Paramus. “Placed beneath the skin, Radiesse raises the skin level so that tendons and joints lose their prominence.”

The key to Radiesse’s success, Chuback says, is that it provides a scaffold for collagen building. The body’s own collagen interweaves into this structure, which makes the skin feel soft, natural and smooth – and look younger.

Applying Radiesse for hand rejuvenation is a simple and easy in-office procedure that usually takes 30 minutes. Patients can resume their normal daily activities without any downtime. Results are seen immediately and can last up to a year. Repeat injections are usually needed to maintain optimal corrections.

Lastly, patients can even out their skin tone by removing brown spots that have accumulated over many years. Dr. Jaime Bastidas, a board-certified plastic surgeon at Chuback Medical Group, uses the PicoSure Laser to target hyperpigmented areas due to sun damage.

Unlike expensive skin care serums and moisturizers, PicoSure’s laser light reaches deep below the surface of the skin causing the brown spots to fade away. Depending on your skin type, multiple sessions may be recommended to achieve the best results. PicoSure laser skin treatments are not considered painful, but a cooling cream is available to help alleviate discomfort during the procedure. After treatment, some redness and minor swelling is common, but will resolve rapidly. Most people can resume their regular activities immediately following treatment.

Treatments with Microphlebectomy, Radiesse and PicoSure are considered an elective procedure and not covered by insurance. The staff at Chuback Medical Group will consult with prospective patients and discuss payment options for the procedure. For more information, call 201-693-4847 or visit chubackmedical.com.

The RPhS certification signifies that Kristen Socha has achieved advanced qualifications related to vascular ultrasound technology— which is a critical part of vascular surgery. With RPhS certification, Kristen Socha is deemed a leader in ultrasonography studies, with the advanced skills and knowledge needed to make sound diagnoses in vascular disease.

Kristen Socha of Paramus, NJ Chuback Medical Group.png “As a practitioner, I am always continuing my medical education to maintain my skills and keep current with existing medical practices.  I am proud to say that I recently became a Registered Phlebology Sonographer, which provides me with the advanced qualifications to perform and interpret venous ultrasonography studies.  Obtaining the RPhS certification was essential for me to continue to provide exceptional patient care in the area of venous disease,” says Socha.

The RPhS designation and certification process was developed to recognize physicians and technologists in vascular medicine who have special skills performing venous examination. In order for Kristen Socha to earn the valued RPhS certification, she first had to meet specific educational and professional requirements. She then had to document training and experience performing venous examinations.  After she completed her training, she passed her certification examination from the Cardiac Credentialing International (CCI).

“I am extremely proud of Ms. Socha’s most recent accomplishment and new credential.  She is an extremely talented practitioner who has impacted many patient’s lives in the areas of medical weight loss, cosmetic medicine, and varicose vein care. I continue to support her passion for being the best clinician that she can be. And, this is always equated with higher education, advanced training and recognized certifications,” said Medical Director Dr. John Chuback. The exam takes four hours to complete, and contains 200 questions covering current vascular laboratory practice, diagnostic knowledge, and clinical skills.

Having a certified RPhS on staff at Chuback Medical Group is a valuable addition for both the center and the patients it serves. It is also a compliment to the fact that, at CMG, only Registered Phlebology Sonographers perform vascular sonography examinations.

A Closer Look at Dysport for Improved Skin Appearance for Patients in Paramus, NJ

Dysport treatments provide individuals with an alternative to Botox for improving facial appearance. Surprisingly, both injections contain similar types of botulinum toxin, which helps smooth facial wrinkles such as frown lines and crow’s feet. Dysport, however, is the newer of the two products, and many cosmetic physicians actually prefer Dysport over Botox.

Medically speaking, Dysport works to impede communication between muscle tissue and the nerves around the face. This actually causes the muscles to cease contracting, and thus reduces the appearance of facial wrinkles, for up to four months. Interestingly, Dysport’s effect on muscle tissue has additional indications for the treatment of a condition known as cervical dystonia.

Contents of Dysport

Available at the Chuback Medical Group clinic in Paramus, New Jersey, Dysport contains ingredients similar to Botox as previously noted. The primary ingredient in Dysport remains botulinum toxin type A, but other inactive ingredients include lactose and human albumin, in addition to a derivative of cow’s milk protein.

Paramus NJ - Dysport - top doctor.jpgLactose is a type of sugar found in milk, and it is not uncommon for individuals to possess dietary lactose intolerance. Human albumin, on the other hand, is a type of naturally-occurring protein found in blood plasma.

Dysport Injection Candidates

Dysport has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for individuals between the ages of 18 and 65. Due to the possibility of adverse reactions with certain medications, individuals over the age of 65 are not good candidates for Dysport treatments. Similarly, Dysport has not been studied for people younger than the age of 18; many cosmetic physicians across the country will not perform Dysport injections on young adults on principle.

Potential Side Effects of Dysport

The same skin-tightening Paramus, NJ, clinic previously noted also advises clients on the potential side effects of Dysport treatments. Instances of severe adverse reactions are few and far between, but individuals considering Dysport should nonetheless be aware of these possible side effects.

The most serious side effects listed by Dysport’s manufacturer involve the inability to speak, swallow, or breathe after receiving the injections. These side effects can occur as soon as a few hours after treatments or several weeks later.

Since Dysport acts to inhibit the function of muscles, a small number of recipients may experience difficulties breathing and swallowing, which can be quite harmful if not treated promptly. Another category of side effects involves the botulinum toxin spreading unintentionally to other areas of the body, triggering a condition known as botulism. Signs of botulism include severe muscle weakness, vision problems, inability to control bladder function, a hoarse voice, and problems breathing and swallowing.

The New Jersey anti-aging clinic noted above also advises patients that the majority of individuals receiving Dysport experience only mild side effects. The most common side effects include discomfort around the injection site, fatigue, and dry mouth. Other uncomfortable side effects may include headaches, muscle and neck pain, blurred vision, and double vision.

Rarely, individuals may experience an allergic reaction to the injection after receiving Dysport. These allergic reactions, such as dizziness and wheezing, may resemble the symptoms of an asthma attack. Individuals may also notice a rash and itchy welts if an allergic reaction to Dysport occurs.

Despite the possible adverse side effects, Dysport injection is a very effective procedure that can yield results rather quickly. As an alternative to Botox, Dysport remains one of the most popular cosmetic injections around the world.

Zap Migraines Using Botox®

Botox®, famous for its aesthetic ability to smooth out facial wrinkles, is now FDA approved for the treatment of chronic migraine headaches.  Chronic migraines affect approximately 3.2 million Americans, with women being three times more likely to be diagnosed with the condition.  Migraine headaches can be extremely debilitating, limiting patient’s social and professional interactions and compromising their quality of life.

A migraine is a type of headache that begins as a dull ache and then turns into a constant, throbbing pain.  Patients who suffer from migraine headaches often complain of nausea and a sensitivity to light and sound.  Triggers that set off migraines are different for every patient – and can include your lifestyle, the foods you eat, and a family history.  Someone who suffers from chronic migraines has symptoms at least fifteen days a month with each headache lasting four or more hours.

Administering Botox® for migraine headaches is a simple, well tolerated procedure that can be performed in the office in a matter of minutes. The number and location of the injection sites depend on the pain distribution and are different for each patient.  On average, the healing effect of a single Botox® treatment will last up to 3 months.  The cost of the Botox® treatment will vary from one patient to another depending on the severity of symptoms and the amount of Botox® needed to treat them.

Other scientific studies and our experience confirm that Botox® injections can be used to decrease the quantity and severity of tension headaches as well. If you are one of the 3.2 million Americans suffering from migraines or tension headaches, speak with your practitioner today to find a treatment plan that is right for you.  Start relieving your headache symptoms today.

Do Your Hands Give Away Your Age?

When women consider an area for aesthetic improvement, they usually focus on their face. However, your hands are one of the most “tell tale” sites of aging – and are so often ignored or forgotten! As we age, the skin on the back of the hands becomes thinner and almost translucent. Brown spots begin to appear. Tendons, veins and joints begin to protrude through the skin. These changes occur slowly over time and are secondary to years of sun exposure, in addition to the loss of collagen and elastin. Combating the aging process takes more than just an over-the-counter hand cream. The latest anti-aging medical advancements have given us a set of procedures that promise a dramatic and immediate improvement.
Microphlebectomy is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to treat bulging veins in the hand. During this procedure, tiny incisions are made over the bulging vein and a special instrument is used to remove the vein through the opening in the skin. The vein treatment itself usually takes less than an hour. Recovery is rapid with patients promptly returning to normal activities following the procedure. Most patients experience little to no scarring with excellent clinical and cosmetic results.

Cosmetic Filler injections with Radiesse immediately plump up and replenish the volume to the back of the hands to provide a supple and youthful appearance. Placed beneath the skin, Radiesse raises the skin level so that veins, tendons and joints lose their prominence. Because Radiesse provides a scaffolding for collagen-building, the skin is kept feeling soft, natural and smooth. Using cosmetic fillers for hand rejuvenation is a simple and easy in-office procedure that usually takes 30 minutes. There is no downtime required and the results are seen immediately.

In addition to these advanced procedures, another useful and essential practice to keep the hands youthful in appearance is the use of sunscreen with an SPF of 30. Many of us neglect our hands when applying sunscreen or immediately wash our hands after an application leaving them susceptible to the harmful rays. Without protection, sun damaged skin will begin to show as freckles or “age spots” which can be unsightly. Sunscreens usually contain emollients, like lanolin, which coat the skin for smoothness, and humectants such as glycerins, which attract and bind with moisture to keep skin hydrated. Some sunscreens even contain antioxidants (such as vitamin C or E), which will help prevent cell damage and the unwanted age spots.

Any of these simple techniques can reverse the aging process and can give your hands a younger, refreshed look! Don’t let your hands give away your age – speak with your practitioner today to find out which options are best for you!
