There are 20 to 30 million people in the United States who suffer from vein disease. These patients usually present symptoms such as pain, heaviness, varicose veins and spider veins. If left untreated, this disease can progress into venous stasis ulcers.
What causes vein disease?
What are leg ulcers?
Leg ulcers, also known as venous stasis ulcers, are caused by poor circulation and pooling of the blood in the legs secondary to venous reflux. When the vein walls and valves weaken, blood refluxes back down into the lower extremity causing a buildup of fluid. This fluid may leak out of the veins into the surrounding skin causing the leg to swell. When the leg swells, it causes breaks in the skin which develop into painful ulcerations. Since circulation is poor, healing is very difficult and prolonged. Patient’s may also experience itching, redness or a brownish discoloration surrounding the ulcer. It is important to consult with a vein specialist in order to treat ulcers. The varicose vein specialists at Chuback Medical Group can help.
What treatments are available?
Before treatment, your varicose vein doctor will do a screening and evaluation of your condition to determine the best treatment options. Treatment of leg ulcers may include the use of compression stockings and the avoidance of standing or sitting for long periods in order to decrease the swelling in the leg. At our Paramus, New Jersey varicose vein center, we offer some of the latest minimally invasive vein disease treatments. These treatments include Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT Treatment) by a laser expert, ambulatory phlebectomies and sclerotherapy.
